The Erickson Family

All the information on this page was
compiled by my husband's uncle, Jack Erickson before he died and Helen Carlson. In
the middle of the preparing this page, a new cousin 'found' me on the internet.
Sheryl Campbell was able to furnish me with more information on Erick Mattsson and CFO.
photos of past family reunions.
First Generation:
Old Stockholm*
Eric Mattsson was born in 1792 in
Botkyrka Parish in Stockholm, Sweden. He lived there with his family until just before his
son, CFO was born. He was a crofter (farmer) from 1829 to 1833. He married
Anna Maria Ericsdotter.
Second Generation:

1. Margareta Christine
Ericsdotter was born 1817 in Botkyrka Parish in Stockholm, Sweden.
2. Anna Sofia Ericsdotter was
born 1819 in Botkyrka Parish in Stockholm, Sweden.
3. Johan Eric Ericsson was
born 1822 in Botkyrka Parish in Stockholm, Sweden.
4. Maria Wilhelmina
Ericsdotter was born 1825 in Botkyrka Parish in Stockholm, Sweden.
5. Catherina Charlotta
Ericsdotter was born 1827 in Botkyrka Parish in Stockholm, Sweden.
6. Carl "CFO"
Frederick Oscar Erickson was born August 17, 1828 in Korsang, Huddinge Parish, Stockholm,
Sweden. He married Anna Frygsteb, Anna Mathilda, Anna Lovisa and Anna Gustafson. He died
February 5, 1909 in Selma, California.
7. Augusta Ericsdotter was born
between1829 and 1830, most likely in Huddinge Parish, Stockholm, Sweden.
8. Anders Pehr Ericsson was
born 1831 in Huddinge Parish, Stockholm, Sweden.
9. Frans Gustaf Erickson
married Edla Carlsson. Frans, emigrated to the United States in 1871 along with CFOs
wife, Anna Lovisa and her two children, Augusta and Gustaf Albin. According to his
memoirs of his voyage, he also traveled with this brothers-in-law, Eric Ekberg and Carl
Erson and his two sons, August and Robert.
Third Generation:

Carl "CFO" Frederick Oscar
Erickson was born August 17, 1828 in Stockholm, Sweden. He changed the family name from
Mattsson to Erickson. Patronymic names were common in Sweden in earlier years.
Instead of taking the father's last name, they would take their father's first name and
add "son" or "dotter" (daughter) to the end; hence,
Erickson.
CFO married
Anna Frygsteb. Anna died
at the age of 20, when Carl Erick Robert was born. CFOs second wife also died in
childbirth when Anna Mathilda was born. His third wife was Anna Lovisa "Louise".
She was the mother of Augusta, Gustave and Emma.
In 1870, CFO left his wife and three
of his children to migrate to the United States. He settled in Austin, a suburb of
Chicago, Illinois. A year later, CFO's brother, Gustave brought his family and CFO's
family over from Sweden. The two brother worked together as carpenters. They
charged $10.00 for a six-day work week. A house that they built, cost $325.00.
On October 8 and 9, 1871, CFO lost
his home and all of his belongings to the Chicago fire. He was able to save the
family Bible and his carpenter tool chest that he had brought with him from Sweden. In
1879, CFO bought a 40 acre farm adjoining Gustaves in Door County, Wisconsin. In May
of 1887, CFO sold the 40 acres to his son-in-law, John Sandren for $350. In 1888, CFO, his
wife and daughter, Emma, now 12 years old, moved to Odebolt, Iowa. His other daughter Anna
Mathilda and her husband lived there. On December 14, 1893, CFO left for Selma,
California. They were accompanied by the Petterson family. Both families bought ranches
out of Kingsburg, California. When his daughter Anna Mathilda and her family moved to
Parlier, California, CFO sold his ranch and moved next door to them. Anna Lovisa died in
Parlier and CFO married Anna Gustafson, a widow with a grown son. CFO and Anna had no
children together.
In 1901, CFO was one of 13 founders
of the first Baptist Church in Kingsburg, California at the Rockdale Hall. CFO died
February 5, 1909 in Selma, California. He is buried in the Kingsburg Cemetery. The
Erickson family became aware that he had no headstone, so in 1998, that was corrected.
In October of 1999, we had a family reunion there
and were able to dedicate it.
1. Carl Erick Robert Erickson was
born October 17, 1851 in Stockholm, Sweden. His mother, Anna Fgysteb, died giving
birth to Carl. Carl married Hilda Caroline Borgeson. Carl died April 29, 1935 in
Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
2. Anna Mathilda Erickson was born
August 14, 1856 in Sweden. Her mother's name was also Anna Mathilda(?) and she died
giving birth to Anna. Anna did not accompany the family when they came in 1871, but came
some time after. She married Gustave Nygren, November 28, 1876 in Chicago, Illinois. They
had twelve children, all born in Iowa: Ellas, born June 7, 1878; Selma, born October 26,
1879; Olga, born January 7, 1881; Anges, born April 14, 1882; Anna, born March 9, 1884;
Alice, born January 26, 1886; Almer, born, February 14, 1888; Elmer, born April 6, 1889;
Alphina, born July 15, 1891; George, born September 9, 1893; Leticia, born May 9, 1895 and
Harold, born October 6, 1896. The family moved to Parlier, California. Anna died November
26, 1935 in Hayward, California. Both Mathilda and Gustaf Nygren are buried at the Odd
Fellows cemetery in Selma, California.
The children of CFO and Anna
Lovisa Ostenberg:
3. Augusta Erickson was born March
4, 1862 in Stockholm, Sweden. She married John Sandgren and lived in Chicago. She had
diabetes and was blind for two years before she died.
4.
Gustave Albin Erickson was born July 5, 1868 in
Stockholm, Sweden. He was three years old when he came from Sweden and spent most of his
youth in Door County, Wisconsin. When he was a young man, he decided he did not want to be
a farmer, so he moved back to Chicago and took up the trade of his father. He was a
building contractor in Maywood, Illinois and married Augusta Wilhelmina
Malmquist. Augusta
had recently arrived from Sweden and was working at the home of Ernest Hemingways
parents in Oak Park. They had seven children: Olga, Ralph, Virginia, Florence, Gladys,
Glenn and Dawn. His family moved from Chicago to Northern Door County right after
the Chicago fire, which was October 8 and 9, 1871. In 1910, Albin bought what is
known in Rowleys Bay as Erickson Point and in about 1915, he build a beautiful
cottage there.
5. Emma Josephine Erickson was born
December 15, 1876, in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. She married Albin Olson and they made their
home in Reedley, California, where they owned a vineyard. They had five children: Irene,
(she only lived about one year), Alice, Leroy, Harry and Florence.
Fourth Generation:
Carl "Charley" Erick
Robert Erickson was born October 17, 1851 in Stockholm, Sweden. His childhood in Sweden
was difficult. Times were hard, and they were poor. Much of the time, he was hungry. As a
young man, he worked as a farmhand, moving from place to place. His right arm was
noticeably shorter than his left, because he was gored by a bull when he was young, but it
was a strong arm and helped to make him an expert at hewing logs with a broad ax. In 1881,
he emigrated via Bremen Haven, Germany on the vessel Malba. He arrived at the port of
Baltimore, Maryland on July 2, 1881. He sent money back to Sweden for
Hilda Caroline Börgesson and they were married on June 19, 1883 at the Moravian church in Ephraim, Door
County, Wisconsin. Hilda was born in Osterjotland, Sweden on September 19, 1857. Their
first home was a log cabin with two rooms and a loft attached to the barn. Hilda died on
New Years Day, 1915 of a burst appendix, causing peritonitis. She had been ill for
about four days. Northern Door County was in the midst of a winter blizzard and it was
impossible to get medical aid. After she died, Charley went out to Phoenix, Arizona with
his son, Hugo and his family. He later moved back to Wisconsin. In 1931, he moved from his
small shack at Uncles Point to his sons house on Bay Shore Drive in Sister
Bay. In the April of 1935, Charley had been ailing and his brother Gus came from
California to see him. Shortly after, Charley was taken to the hospital in Sturgeon Bay
and died there April 29, 1935. He is buried beside Hilda at Little Sisters Cemetery,
Sister Bay, Wisconsin.

In September of 1944, Jack was
serving as a radio man and top turret gunner aboard a B-24 Liberator. In September
of that year, after 11 missions over France and Germany, Jack's plane was shot down and he
had to parachute out over German territory. He was captured and held prisoner in Staling
Lust IV in eastern Isles on the Baltic Sea. The Germans would broadcast the names of
the captured soldiers and the local people would telegraph the information to
the United States via ham radio. Florence received word from a ham radio operator that
Jack had been captured alive and was being held prisoner. Jack kept a diary on the back of
cigarette wrappers. Towards the end of more than seven months in captivity, during which
he was nearly starved, Jack and other POW's were force-marched nearly 1,000 miles through
Germany. Finally, they were liberated by British soldiers. When he was
liberated, he spent a month in England before returning to the states. He transferred his
notes during that time. Many years later, after he had retired from 37 years with Pacific
Bell, he wrote a book about his time in the service. It was never published, but is a
